ReNew the future of energy

·       Part of ReNew’s broader ambition to drive skilling 10,000 individuals by 2030 under Project ReNew Surya

·       Builds on the successful pilot training of more than 350 women from communities in coal-mining regions; the next phase will skill over 500 candidates in solar technologies

Dhanbad, Jharkhand, India | April 6, 2026: ReNew Energy Global Plc (“ReNew” or “the Company”), a leading decarbonization solutions company, today formally inaugurated its Centre of Excellence at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, scaling up Project ReNew Surya, its flagship skilling program that aims to empower 10,000 individuals by 2030 to transition into clean energy livelihoods.

The Centre was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Governor of Jharkhand, Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar, following the successful completion of the first pilot cohort, under which more than 350 women from coalmining communities were trained in solar skills in partnership with IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

Building on this success, the Centre will now expand to train over 500 candidates from coal-dependent regions across Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. The fully sponsored, two-month training programme will equip participants with industry-relevant skills such as Suryamitra solar PV installation, project management, and operations & maintenance, enabling them to transition into careers in the renewable energy sector.

Speaking at the occasion, Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Hon’ble Governor of Jharkhand, said: “This Centre of Excellence at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad represents a significant step toward securing the future of Jharkhand’s communities. As the global energy landscape evolves, it is essential that coal-dependent regions are supported through this transition. This initiative ensures that workers and their families are equipped with the skills needed to participate meaningfully in India’s clean energy future.”

Vaishali Nigam Sinha, Co-founder, ReNew, said: “The successful completion of our first cohort shows that the ‘coal to green’ transition is not just necessary, but achievable at scale. With this Centre of Excellence, we are expanding access to skills and opportunities for coal mine workers and their families. At ReNew, sustainability is about ensuring that communities who powered our past are empowered to shape our future.”

Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad said: “We are grateful to ReNew for partnering with IIT (ISM) Dhanbad on this important initiative. This Centre of Excellence builds on the strong foundation of the pilot phase and reflects the power of academia–industry collaboration in enabling meaningful livelihood transitions. Together, we aim to equip communities from coal mining regions with the skills needed to participate in India’s clean energy future”

This initiative is part of Project ReNew Surya, launched in 2021 to enable livelihood transitions into clean energy. The programme began with a focus on training over 1,000 salt pan workers in the Rann of Kutch and has since expanded to coal-bearing regions. With the current phase, ReNew is strengthening pathways for communities to move from coal-dependent livelihoods to green jobs.

The programme also places a strong emphasis on women’s participation and micro-entrepreneurship, particularly in semi-urban, rural, and tribal regions, enabling access to sustainable and higher-income livelihood opportunities.
